Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the preventionof pre-eclampsia

Pre-eclampsia is a syndrome which complicates 5-10% of pregnancies. The disorder is oneof the main causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. There are many theorieswhich try to explain the causes of pre-eclampsia but the etiology of the syndrome still remainsunclear. There are many risk factors of pre-eclampsia. Recently the researchers focuses onworking out the methods of prophylaxis of pre-eclampsia.In this work the review of the literature is presented which concerns the role of oxidative stress,the imbalance in the synthesis of prostaglandins, the activation of proinflammatory processesin the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia as well as the proposals and attempts of the use ofunsaturated fatty acids omega-3 in the prophylaxis of pre-eclampsia.
