Polish Gynecological Society recommends the supplementation with 0.4mg of folic acid inpericonceptional period and the first trimester of pregnancy. 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and folicacid have similar biological activity, bioavailability and comparably reduce plasma homocy-steine concentration. 5-methyltetrahydrofolate more effectively increases plasma and red blo-od cell folate levels compared with folic acid. 5-methyltetrahydrofolate might constitute analternative form of folate supplementation. Research on the effect of 5-methyltetrahydrofolateand folic acid equimolar doses on the reduction level of neonatal neural tube defects areessential.
