Chinese medicine therapies for perimenopausal period

The term menopause is defined by WHO as the permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from the loss of the ovarian hormonal activity. 70% of perimenopausal and early postmenopausal women experience symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, depression, fatigue. They are increasingly seeking complementary help and many of them choose Chinese medicine therapies. The purpose of the present paper is to present the selected studies on Chinese medicine therapies for menopausal symptoms in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women on the basis of articles published in 2010-2013 and retrieved through EBSCO Discovery Science and from PubMed database. The analyse of the literature led to the conclusion that Chinese medicine therapies may be effective in treatment and prevention of certain menopausal problems. Acupuncture proved beneficial in treatment of hot flashes and insomnia in postmenopausal women. Electroacupuncture and electropuncture could be helpful in obesity treatment as they reduce body weight and the percentage of body fat in peri- and postmenopausal women. Also the herbal formula Fufang demonstrated to be effective in prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis and reduction of fragility fracture incidence. Only auricular acupressure failed to have any direct influence on anxiety in menopausal women. It reduced, however, the dosage of sedative drugs taken by the participants, which may be indirect evidence of the benefit of this therapy. The papers analysed demonstrated beneficial effects of complementary therapies in treatment of selected menopausal symptoms but further studies with larger samples and longer follow-up are necessary to prove those therapies effective in peri- and postmenopausal symptoms
