The risk of puerperal infections occurrence after cesarean section is 5 to 20 times greater than after vaginal delivery. Considering the high number of cesarean deliveries (1/5 deliveries in USA and European countries) and the possibility of serious infection developments with increased morbidity and mortality in the mother, prophylactic administration of antibiotics during cesarean section is a hot topic in perinatal medicine. This manuscript briefly summarizes current opinions and literature reviews related to antibiotic administration during cesarean section in the prophylaxis of puerperal infections.
